Ras el Hanout Spice Mix

with Organic Chickpeas 6″ Cinnamon Sticks

Ras el Hanout is a spice blend common in North African cooking, which is especially used in Moroccan cuisine. It plays a similar role in North African cuisine as garam masala does in Indian cuisine.

The name is Arabic for “head of the shop” (similar to the English expression “top-shelf”) and is known to be a mixture of the best spices the seller has to offer. We like to think that our mix is made with some of the best spices Westpoint has to offer!
There is no mandatory composition of spices that makes up Ras el Hanout. Each shop, company, or family may have their own blend, we have our mix with a mixture of spices like Paprika, Cumin, Turmeric, Cardamon and many other delicious spices.

The mixture usually consists of over a dozen spices, in different proportions, our mix includes a mix of 18 different amazing spices. It’s a delicious rub for beef, chicken or fish and a wonderful flavor base for soups, stews and marinades. We even have many vegetarian dishes that it is tasty in!

Why are all natural spice mixes healthy for you?

Ras el Hanout has high levels of essential oils that are beneficial for health. Among the oils are piperine from black pepper, pinene from cardamom and nutmeg. There is also oleic acid from the coriander.

Another great source of vitamins such as coriander which is a great source of vitamin C, a nutrient lacking in most other spices. Other vitamins found in Ras el Hanout include niacin and thiamin from cardamom and vitamin A from cinnamon.

Turmeric is one of the most anti-inflammatory agent due to it’s active component curcumin which has been shown to reduce symptoms of arthritis while lowering cholesterol and protecting your liver! Gingeris another powerful anti-inflammatory that supports a healthy heart and offers multiple benefits to the digestive tract.

Westpoint Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups cooked Chickpeas
  • 1 teaspoon Ras El Hanout Spice Blend
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ginger Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • A pinch of Saffron threads
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 4 cups/1 litre vegetable broth (Made with Gluten Free Vegetarian Broth Mix)
  • A pinch of Himalayan Mineral Salt
  • A pinch of Black Pepper Powder
  • Optional: A dash of Nutmeg Powder
  • Optional: 1 to 2 teaspoons Organic Corn Starch (for thickening)

Other Ingredients

  • 500 g fresh pumpkin (diced in 1/4″ pieces)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or olive oil)
  • 1 medium to large onion (chopped)
  • 1 small bunch of cilantro (small sprigs, tied into a bouquet)
  • 2 to 3 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons honey

Method

1) In a small stock pot, saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium-low heat until tender, about 2 to 3 minutes.
2) Add the pumpkin, chickpeas, tomato, cilantro, broth, honey, spices and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer, partially covered, about 15 minutes, until the pumpkin is just tender. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick and cilantro.
3) If you wish to thicken the broth a bit, transfer several spoonfuls of broth to a bowl and allow it cool slightly. Add one or two teaspoons of cornstarch to the cooled broth and stir until the mixture is smooth. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the soup and simmer for several more minutes, until the broth has thickened.
4) Serve the soup hot or warm with a garnish of fresh cilantro and freshly ground pepper and nutmeg.
