Did you know how the first Gummy Bears were inspired? The first gummy candies were shaped like bears because the inventor of them was inspired by the dancing bears they had grown up watching at street festivals around Europe (This back back in the 1920’s after all).

The original Gummy Bears were taller and thinner to look like the bears we would see out in the wild today. After WWII, many gummy companies wanted to produce more kid friendly gummies known as Gummibärchen (“little gummy bears”). These are the adorable little smushier bears we know and love today. Amazing to see how far we have come from 1920 to 2022 where we now have natural and vegan bears to offer that are still just as adorable.

We in North America actually got introduced to the Gummy Bear all thanks to German-language teachers in schools that gave some gummy bears in classrooms so their students could sample foreign cuisines. Also after the war, many American and Canadian servicemen brought gummy souvenirs from overseas for their families. From there the popularity of the Gummy Bear grew and became one the most popular candies to snack on.

We are so excited to have another delicious vegan candy to offer. Our Vegan Bears use Pectin instead of Gelatin to give our Vegan Bears their chewy texture. Pectin is a water-soluble fibre located in the cellular walls of fruit. Apples, grapes, cherries and citrus fruits like lemons and grapefruit have a high concentration of pectin. This makes it perfect for a plant based snack!

Fun Fact: There was actually a show about Gummy Bears back in the 1980’s which really shows how beloved this candy is to us. The theme song really sums it up!

It can be fun to plan a day to do recipes together so your family can get excited about time in the kitchen and make it fun for children to play around with their food in a good way! Starting with our Vegan Bears can be a great place to start with making food fun again.

Vegan Bears are a great snack on their own, but in the summer, the best thing you can do with them is turn them into popsicles. Just freeze the Vegan Bears in a popsicle mold 3/4 of the way full with Sprite or lemonade and wait until they are frozen to become the perfect addition to a sunny afternoon. If you want to go make some adult popsicles for you and your partner, use sparkling wine and lemonade instead of Sprite.
